08 January 2026: PayPoint and Lloyds today reveal transaction data showing customers were quick to deposit their Christmas money at local convenience shops over the Christmas period, making great use of local cash options during the festivities.

The very first festive deposit of Christmas cash was made bright and early at 00:05 in London on the morning of the 25th December, swiftly followed by two more deposits at 00:06 in Glasgow and 00:07 in London.
From Christmas Eve through to New Year’s Day, local convenience stores across the UK helped 15,789 customers make cash deposits. Over the period retailers handled £2,207,152 in deposits, facilitating even more cash service options in communities during the festivities.

2,836 deposits worth £392,575 were made across PayPoint’s network of stores over Christmas Day and Boxing Day, as Lloyds’ customers took advantage of the ability to swiftly deposit their Christmas cash at local retailers.

The cities that saw the highest usage of cash services from Christmas Eve to New Years Day were:

  1. London, £210,437
  2. Glasgow, £74,500
  3. Birmingham, £63,241
  4. Liverpool, £56,975
  5. Manchester, £53,771

During the period between Boxing Day and New Years Eve, customers continued to make use of their local retailers with 41% of deposits taking place outside of traditional banking hours, including early morning, in the evening or on a weekend.

This Christmas, we’ve seen customers dashing to their local shops to deposit cash, whether it’s last-minute earnings or holiday cash gifts. Local retailers are helping keep cash flowing and supporting communities to manage their money, even on Christmas Day. It really shows the important role retailers play in keeping cash services accessible throughout the holidays.
