Sending money to the wrong account can be costly and frustrating for both businesses and customers. Confirmation of Payee is a service designed to reduce these risks by verifying that the name entered for a payment matches the account details held by the receiving bank. Confirmation of Payee checks the name of the account holder against the sort code and account number before a payment is made. This helps prevent misdirected payments and protects against certain types of fraud.
Why Confirmation of Payee Was Introduced
Misdirected payments and authorised push payment (APP) fraud have increased significantly in recent years. In response, UK regulators and banks introduced Confirmation of Payee as a way to give people greater confidence when making payments.
The service allows businesses and individuals to check whether they are sending money to the correct recipient before completing the transaction.
How Confirmation of Payee Works
When a payment is initiated, the service performs a check using three pieces of information:
The system then returns one of three responses:
Match The name matches the account details.
Close match The name is similar but not identical.
No match The details do not match the account.
This allows the payer to decide whether to proceed or review the payment details.
